How to massage infant tummy at home?

If your child has gas difficulties that cause them to be distressed, it might mean long nights with little sleep, lots of screaming, and a baby who simply cannot calm.

You may be willing to go to any length to help your kid feel better.

Baby massage is frequently advised as a treatment for gas. But, if you’re new to this, you may be thinking, “What kind of massage works?” Are there any specific tactics you should employ? How to massage infant tummy smoothly? We’ve got your back.

 

First and foremost, you should always consult with your doctor before using any at-home treatments. Your doctor may discuss critical safety or efficacy issues, as well as options you hadn’t considered!

If you are given the green light to attempt giving your infant a massage for gas, begin by analyzing your child’s mood. For an infant tummy massage to be effective, it should be relaxed, aware, and content before you begin. Stop the infant belly massage if your infant appears to be uncomfortable or upset at any point.

Massage your infant first thing in the morning or before they go to bed as part of their bedtime ritual. You can massage them every day or just once in a while. Pay attention to your baby’s indications for the optimum time of day for a massage and how frequently you should attempt it.

Infant tummy massage strokes for the stomach are intended to help trapped air to move. The objective is to transport gas and other materials from the intestines to the bowels.

Many of the stomach strokes recommended for gas start at the bottom right side of your baby’s belly (where the big intestine begins) and conclude at the lower left side of your baby’s belly (where the colon begins). When staring at your infant, move your gaze from left to right.

Some of the infant belly massage techniques described in Vimala McClure’s book “Infant Massage: A Handbook for Loving Parents” include:

  • The hands of a clock Consider your baby’s stomach to be the face of a clock. Begin around 7 or 8 a.m. and move in a half-moon shape from left to right, softly pushing and sliding your hands clockwise. The movement of one hand is followed by the movement of the other.
  • Paddling. Gently press in towards the rib cage and glide down the length of your baby’s tummy using the long, broad, pinky-side of your hands horizontally over your baby’s belly. The movement of one hand is followed by the movement of the other.
  • Fulling. Spread your two thumbs across your baby’s tummy, just above the belly button. Slide the thumbs aside from each other by gently pushing in.
  • I adore you. Trace the letter I starting on the right side of your baby’s belly button. Trace the letter L sideways, beginning at the top left corner of the baby’s tummy and traveling across and down the right side. Finish with an inverted U shape, tracing up from the bottom left corner of the baby’s tummy, over the body above the belly button, and down the right side. Don’t pass up the chance to tell your baby how much you love them while you’re at it!
  • Moonwalking. Begin on the left side, just above the belly button, then slowly stroll and glide your pointer and middle fingers over the baby’s body to the right.

 

Massage of the baby’s feet for gas

Proponents of foot reflexology claim that the technique may alleviate symptoms such as gas and indigestion, although scientific proof is weak.
Reliable Source. Again, it is essential to consult with your doctor before initiating any at-home treatment, such as reflexology.

If your doctor thinks it’s OK to try, think about the pressure point for the stomach and intestines, which is located near the top middle of the foot, just below the pad. Gently massaging this region of your baby’s foot may provide some relief from gas.

Colic massage for babies

Colic is not caused by a single factor. While gas has been proposed as a probable reason, therapies targeted at decreasing gas do not necessarily alleviate colic symptoms.

Parents of a colicky infant should be prepared to use a variety of calming methods, which may include infant belly massage if desired.

Consult your child’s doctor if you detect excessive spit-up or projectile vomit in their burps, or if your child appears to be in discomfort during or after feedings.

Your doctor can rule out other possible reasons for the discomfort, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and provide other therapies as needed.

Other suggestions for gas management

If infant tummy massage doesn’t appear to be working for your child, or if you’re searching for some additional comfort measures, there are a variety of options available to assist control and avoid gas:

  • While lying on their back, ride your child’s legs in the air. If your child is constipated, this may assist move gas through the system and stimulate a stool.
  • Gently rotate baby’s legs and hips from side to side to assist things to flow down the digestive tract.
  • Spend some extra time during feeds burping your infant to allow air to escape early in the digestive process.
  • Check the nipple flow if you’re bottle-feeding. Your youngster may be gulping air when they drink if the flow is too rapid.
  • Change the brand of the bottle. Though no single brand is perfect for eliminating gas, there may be one that works better for your kid in terms of decreasing gas.
  • Replace your baby’s powdered formula with a ready-made version. If you don’t see any difference, you can return to the (less costly) powdered version.
  • Some parents claim that over-the-counter medicines such as gripe water or gas drops help their children with gas. Before you pursue this path, consult with your child’s doctor.
