WSQ Provide Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage
WHAT IS A LYMPH?
Lymph is a fluid which circulates around the body through a system of vessels separate from those involved in the circulation of blood. It is a key part of the immune system and its purpose is to remove harmful chemicals from the body. Lymph is white in colour, and you may have seen your own lymph if ever you cut yourself and the emerging fluid was white.
HOW DOES MLD REMOVE LYMPH FROM THE BODY?
The lymphatic system, which is the network of tubes and nodes through which lymph travels, operates differently from the more familiar cardiovascular system. While the heart pumps blood to and from the body’s muscles, the lymphatic system operates in a less systematic fashion. There is no central pump but the continual movement of muscles will stimulate lymph movement around the body; the lymphatic process is one of gentle nudging and encouragement.
This is where Manual Lymphatic Drainage comes in useful. Through the use of the hands MLD therapists encourage the flow of lymph through the body using circular and spiral strokes. The technique is complex but the basic idea is to control the flow of lymph around the body.
One of the principles MLD therapists learn as they work towards certification is to apply different levels of pressure at different stages of the treatment. Through careful manipulation and coaxing of the lymphatic system, the practitioner will stimulate a beneficial flow of lymph through the patient’s body.
WHAT CONDITIONS IS MANUAL LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE (MLD) USED TO TREAT?
WSQ Provide Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage is used to treat patients whose lymph vessels have swollen significantly. This condition is called lymphedema and usually happens in the arms or legs, frequently after surgery.
